Elisha Smart and his wife Eliza Fell Smart were early settlers of the pioneer community known as Cass. Elisha’s older brother William, married Eliza’s sister, Mary Fell and together the two families farmed and contributed to the development of Cass. Josephine Smart, the youngest child of Elisha and Eliza, married Martin B. Madden who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1905 to 1928. The Madden’s summer home built in 1903 on the Smart family farm is now located on North Frontage and Bailey Roads on the Carmelite Spiritual Center property.
