Martin B. Madden and Castle Eden

Martin Barnaby Madden married Josephine Smart in 1878. Madden rose from working as a water boy at the Western Stone quarry in Lemont, Illinois, to becoming the President of the company. He was also a member of the Chicago City Council from 1889-1897, and one of the most important members of the U.S. House of Representatives in which he served from 1905 to 1928. In 1903, he built a summer home “Castle Eden” on Josephine’s childhood home.
